The Commonwealth Government is appointing Mr Ian Hanger AM QC to assist with mediation and settlement of compensation for families and small businesses affected by Labor’s failed Home Insulation Programme.
Mr Hanger oversaw the Royal Commission into the Home Insulation Program in his role as Commissioner. His new appointment provides continuity for the families of the four men who died.
Mr Hanger’s understanding of the ongoing distress and anguish facing the families means he is uniquely placed to assist in the speedy provision of compensation.
Similarly, his understanding of the hardship faced by affected insulation businesses means that all concerned can have confidence that the process will be approached as he recommended.
The Government will be releasing its full response to the Report of the Royal Commission into the Home Insulation Program by the end of the year.
Representatives of the families and affected business have expressed confidence in Mr Hanger’s unique knowledge of the issues and his balance. This view is shared by the Commonwealth.
In addition to undertaking the Royal Commission, Mr Hanger QC has participated in over 3,000 mediations during the course of his distinguished career.
Mr Hanger was admitted to practice as a Barrister in 1968, and is highly regarded as a leading commercial dispute resolution practitioner, and has extensive experience conducting and appearing before commissions of inquiry.
Mr Hanger was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1984 and a Member of the Order of Australia in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and of Laws from the University of Queensland and a Master of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology.
